About us

Giuseppe Gallo purchased his first piece of farmland in La Moschella in 1946, at almost sixty years of age. He was born in Lavello (Basilicata) in 1888 and was the third of four siblings.
Like others his age, he wasn't spared the experience of war, but managed to transform his encounter with a very different situation from that of the Basilicata region (having fought in the North East) into a turning point, thanks to his natural open-mindedness.
Upon returning home, for many years he worked on land leased by other local owners. Then, in 1946, he purchased his first hectares of land in La Moschella (a suburb of Cerignola), on the banks of the Ofanto river.
His experience, and the undeniable backing of an economically fortuitous post-war period, allowed him to expand his property, reaching a size of about 180 hectares.
Even today the Masseria Moschella land covers the southern edge of the hills overlooking the Ofanto and part of the valley where the river marks the border between Puglia and Basilicata.  Thanks to its position, in 2007 the farm was included within the confines of the Ofanto River Regional Park.

In the 1950s Giuseppe Gallo planted new trees to protect the river banks and hilly terrain, because he knew the importance of caring for the land. He also sowed wheat, planted an olive grove, an orchard and a vineyard. For several years he also had a sheep farm... all this to diversify production and support what we would today call a local "ecosystem".
At the beginning of the 1970s the passing of the property to the new generation was made official, and the land was divided among the children Vincenza, Angela and Biagio.
